RE

“The principal aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.”

Shropshire Agreed Syllabus 2021–2026

Here at St Andrew’s CE Primary School we believe that our ambitious RE curriculum will serve to create a responsible and respectful community of children. We use RE to help children to develop their understanding of the world and how to live in it, giving children opportunities to explore and respond to some of the big questions addressed by religious and non-religious traditions and culture.

We will explore what it means to be a good human and a good Christian as we build on our understanding of Christianity. We will also explore religion in a local, global and national context, fostering a deeper understanding of other world religions and beliefs.

Our core Christian values will guide us on our journey through the curriculum and underpin all of our learning;

  • Respect – we will respect other people’s beliefs and opinions, whilst feeling respected enough to contribute our own opinions and ideas
  • Trust – we trust each other to be good humans and to listen and learn from the knowledge and wisdom being shared
  • Care – we value and care for each other and we are considerate and kind throughout
  • Courage – we have the courage to say what we believe and join in with thought-provoking dialogue in a respectful and considerate manner
  • Perseverance – we will persevere in our quest for knowledge and wisdom
  • Responsibility – we will conduct ourselves responsibly throughout our learning process to ensure that we can become an outstanding citizen

We use a question-based model to ensure that all pupils can makes sense of beliefs, making connections and understanding the impact. Using a combination of units based on Understanding Christianity and the 2021 Shropshire agreed syllabus, we have designed a bespoke curriculum that caters to the needs of all our learners, including those with SEN.

We believe that our curriculum is rich in subject knowledge, and we have chosen to develop understanding that goes deeper rather than broader. With this in mind, our children will develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be Christian, Hindu, Jew and Muslim. We will include further thematic teaching throughout the journey through Reception, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two.

Our aim is to broaden the cultural capital of every child at St Andrews so our curriculum includes many opportunities for culturally rich experiences, including workshops, faith days and educational visits to places of worship.

Our knowledge-rich, sequential curriculum design is carefully sequenced throughout the phases so that each stage of learning builds on the previous stage and unlocks the next stage.
